The beginning

Back in 2010, our founder Ismail Ahmed set out to fix a big problem: millions of people around the world were wasting time and money to support their loved ones back home.

Ismail had experienced these frustrations first-hand. When he was studying in the UK in the 1980s, he spent hours travelling to the nearest money agent to send money to his family in East Africa and faced extraordinarily high fees. 

An expert in global remittances, Ismail soon realised that the entire industry, dominated by a few big incumbents, was ripe for digital disruption. With the help of co-founders Catherine Wines and Richard Igoe, Ismail founded WorldRemit to bring an offline industry to an online future.

Our company is as diverse as our customers with over 30 nationalities alone in London headquarters and a plethora of languages from Amharic to Zulu amongst our global team. WorldRemit’s management, led by CEO Breon Corcoran, comes from many backgrounds and disciplines, but shares a common commitment: we’re digitising the future of money transfers down to the last mile.
