What is the Constitution Day of Nepal?

Nepal Constitution Day takes place every year on 19 September. This historic day commemorates the adoption of the 2015 constitution of Nepal, which signified the country’s shift from being ruled by a constitutional monarchy to becoming a federal republic.

History behind Constitution Day of Nepal

Constitution Day of Nepal didn’t come into being without a few bumps along the way. Like any democratic change, there were a few iterations before the 2015 constitution (today’s version) was established. Here are some of the key events that shaped this governmental change:

  • 1948 - The first attempts at turning Nepal into a democracy.

  • 1951 - The first constitution was put in place, which did little to change the status quo.

  • 1962 - A new constitution banned political parties and gave more power to the king.

  • 1990 - Another constitution established a parliament and supreme court, as well as re-establishing a multi-party system.

  • 2007 - An interim constitution was put in place, while a special committee worked on a permanent one.

  • 2015 - The current constitution was created, establishing the country as a federal republic.

How is Constitution Day celebrated in Nepal?

If you’re visiting Nepal during Constitution Day, you can expect to see a range of celebrations taking place. On the more serious side, there are political meetings with speeches being made. People around the country also prominently display the Nepalese flag in honour of the occasion. More frivolous examples of celebrating including lighting up buildings (much like you might find during Diwali festival). There are also large public gatherings with traditional songs and dances. Culture aficionados will enjoy many displays and artistic performances. For those of you living outside of Nepal during the festivities, you can always send a money transfer there through WorldRemit to help you feel more connected to home. You won’t be alone either – as there are many Nepalese immigrant communities living worldwide in countries like the UK, where the Nepali Gurkhas of Aldershot live.

Importance of Constitution Day of Nepal

So why is  Constitution Day celebrated? Much like the Nepali New Year, Constitution Day marks a momentous occasion on the Nepalese calendar. Without the people’s support, the constitution would be just another ordinary document. Its widespread adoption marked a huge shift for this rapidly developing nation, one that took it from its turbulent past into a more peaceful future. Though the Nepali people did struggle under their monarchs, they were able to successfully transition into life as a republic. Celebrating Constitution Day in Nepal is just another way of declaring, throughout the country and to the world at large, that this is a free nation.
