What fees does my recipient pay in Ghana?

WorldRemit does not charge your recipient any additional fees for the Mobile Money transfer.

However, some local operators may charge them a fee when they withdraw funds as cash. This depends on the mobile operator’s policy and is not determined by WorldRemit.

Does the E-Levy of 1.5% apply to my international remittances?

WorldRemit does not charge your recipient any additional tax for mobile money transfers or any other payout method.

The Ghanaian government introduced a 1.5% tax E-Levy on electronic money transfers on 1 May 2022 made within Ghana , however, the E-levy does not apply to international money transfers. It only applies to electronic transfers made within Ghana.

This means that when you send money using WorldRemit to bank accounts or mobile wallets in Ghana, you will NOT be charged a 1.5% tax. Your recipient will also not pay the E-Levy when they withdraw your transfer from their bank in cash, or cash out at a local agent.

For the latest information about the E-Levy check the official FAQ from the Ghana Revenue Authority.

What are my recipient’s options?

Since the Ghanaian government’s E-levy only applies to mobile money and bank transfers made within Ghana, your recipient can still send to those payout options or they may choose to send money for cash pickup. We have over 2,000 cash pickup locations in Ghana and sending through this payout method will not incur the tax.
