How to use an ATM machine

When Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) were first introduced back in 1967, outside a branch of Barclays in Enfield, north London, they were seen as a real step forward. At last, customers could withdraw cash 24/7 - outside of banking hours.

These machines have gone from strength to strength. Today an ATM can help you in a host of ways. As well as helping you withdraw cash 24/7. An ATM can help you deposit and transfer money, and give you insights into your account balances.

We’ve put this article together to help you make the most of ATMs. Using an ATM can save you time and money during your next transaction - especially when you’re travelling abroad. However, It should be noted that ATMs are all slightly different to one another, so this can only serve as a generic guide.

How much cash can I withdraw from an ATM?

This is very much a question for your bank.  There’s no industry standard on ATM withdrawals. How much you can withdraw will depend on your bank’s own policy, as well as factors such as; how long you’ve had an account. So, speak to your bank - particularly if you want to withdraw a large sum.

Can I deposit money at any ATM?

You can deposit cash at many ATMs, but not all of them. There’s no universal rule on ATM cash deposits— it will depend on the bank. But many financial institutions allow cash deposits at ATMs within their networks. For security reasons, ones that do are usually located within banks.

How to check balance at an ATM

Can I transfer money using an ATM?

Do ATMs charge fees?

This will very much depend on the bank and country you’re in - some are free, some charge a fee. For example the vast majority of ATMs in the UK are free. Independently operated machines can charge around £3 to £5 per transaction. It’s a good idea to use your bank's app to find free ATMs near you.

Are ATMs safe to use?

While ATMs make withdrawing and depositing funds, checking balances, and conducting other transactions quick and convenient, they can also be targets for criminal activity. So, when using an ATM - be aware of those around you and follow some simple guidelines.

  • Cover the pad when entering your PIN number

  • Use an ATM that’s in a well-lit busy area and not tucked in an out-of-the-way, dark spot.

  • Use your bank’s ATM if possible. Free-standing ATMs, such as those in grocery stores or malls, may be easier for criminals to tamper with than an ATM that’s located at your bank.

  • Check out the machine. If you’re using an ATM that doesn’t belong to your bank, then make sure nothing looks out of place. If the keypad seems loose or wobbly, a key sticks, or the on-screen instructions aren’t what you’re used to seeing at an ATM, it could be a red flag that it’s been tampered with by a scammer.

  • Always remember to take your card, cash, and receipt at the end of your transaction.

How to use ATMs : FAQs

Are ATM machines open 24/7?

ATMs that are outside banks can be open 24/7 - this is what makes them so convenient. Of course, if the ATM is inside the bank or store, it won’t be accessible when the bank or store is closed.

What if my card gets stuck in the ATM?

If your card was swallowed by a bank’s ATM, contact your bank or go into the branch with some ID. The branch staff will get your card back if they can, or order a new one for you.

Do ATMs have cameras?

Yes. Many ATMs use two kinds of cameras. The first type (the obvious one) is set up on top or very close to the ATM. The second tends to be hidden inside the ATM itself to allow it to capture the facial features of the customer.
