Getting Ready for Ramadan

How our WorldRemit team reflect during the month

Our Muslim team members make it a point to be more mindful, reflective, and intentional during the 30 days of Ramadan. Most of them do this by taking the time to pause their “normal” life and focus on strengthening their relationship with themselves and religion. They do this by being kinder to themselves and approaching everything with empathy and compassion.

Others in our team have mentioned that through fasting, it becomes easier to connect spiritually and to strengthen their bond with Allah. This is because of the mental clarity fasting brings, as well as how humbling it can be.

Some also mentioned that having a dedicated journal to jot things down throughout the day is helpful to keep track of your thoughts and feelings. It can also be a great way to be more reflective and review how your perspective has improved throughout the month.

Some tips on fasting from our Muslim team members

Suhoor is a priority

Suhoor is your chance to fuel up for the day. So while waking up before sunrise can be challenging, the benefits are well worth it.

Hydrate during suhoor and iftar

Drinking lots of water during dusk and dawn are important to making sure you’re hydrated all day.

Eat mindfully when you can

We know the temptation to eat more than you would normally during suhoor and iftar is there, but if you approach meal times as you would normally - with balance and control - then that’ll limit your chances of indigestion and discomfort.

Be kind to yourself

Fasting isn’t easy on everyone, so take it one day at a time and approach the process with understanding.

It’s mind over matter

Once you’ve focused your mind on fasting, niyaath (intention) will come naturally.

How our Muslim team members give back

Many of our colleagues observing the month have relayed how important sending money and donating zakat is during this time - especially as higher spiritual rewards are on the table.

However, many of them also acknowledged that monetary contributions can be difficult for some. Which is why they’ve shared some ideas on alternative ways to be charitable. Here are a few things you could do:

Organise a fundraiser

If sending money isn’t a realistic financial option for you, organising a fundraiser could be your way to help give back.

Choose a charity that’s important to you

When it comes to choosing a charity, our team members pick ones that are close to their hearts and have an impact on their community, this way they can see the benefits of their contributions.

Share your meal with others

For many, preparing several dishes is too expensive to do throughout the 30 days. So, if you’re thinking of being more charitable, invite people into your home for suhoor or iftar.

What Ramadan means to our Muslim colleagues at WorldRemit

Many of our Muslim colleagues see Ramadan as a time to reflect on their faith and spend quality time with family. It’s a happy time filled with strong memories of family bonding, prayer, and tradition.

Here’s what some of them had to say:

“My dad usually works really late, but during Ramadan, my entire family always breaks our fast together. So I have some really nice memories of us being together and spending quality time throughout the month.”

Olfa, Marketing

“I have some really fun memories about learning how to fast. When I was too young to fast, I remember asking my parents if I could do it anyway because I really wanted to follow in their footsteps. But one time I forgot I was fasting and ate some sweets before sunset.”

Olfa, Marketing

“My sleep pattern changes completely because I’ve got even less time to sleep. Usually, I’ll go to bed late after isha and taraweeh prayers at the Mosque. Then I’ll wake up early in the morning for sahur and have my meal finished before fajar adhan around 4.30am.”

Naeem, Marketing

“Overall there is a special spiritual feeling in our homes. That feeling is nostalgic as it always reminds me of how I used to spend Ramadan as a child. Now I get to share that with my own children and it’s truly priceless!” - Shaheena, Legal
