WorldRemit waives fees in support of Hargeisa fire damage relief efforts

6/4/2022 | 2 minute read

WorldRemit, a leading digital payments platform, is waiving their fees on money transfers to Somaliland in the wake of the recent fire in its capital, Hargeisa. Customers wishing to send money to people in Somaliland in support of relief efforts can do so with no service fee applicable from 4th April to 11th April 2022.

The fire ravaged Waheen market in Somaliland’s capital, Hargeisa, causing estimated losses of between $1.5 billion and $2 billion, according to a preliminary report released by a national task force looking into the fire.

Ismail Ahmed, Founder of WorldRemit said: “Remittances play a vital role in providing relief to communities affected by disasters. This is why we are waiving our fees for anyone who wishes to support the people of Somaliland. Waiving our fees during this time is our way of showing our support to the global Somali community.”

With the WorldRemit app or website, customers can send support to their family and friends in Somaliland free of charge. Support can be sent to Telesom ZAAD mobile money accounts - details on how to send mobile money to Somaliland can be accessed here
