If you want to renew your Nigerian passport in the UK, then you will have to start the process online. To do this, the first step is to visit the Nigeria Immigration Service website to apply for renewal. At the end of the process, you will be required to book an in-person appointment at the office of the Nigeria High Commission in the UK.

Follow these simple steps to learn how to renew your Nigerian passport in the UK:

  1. Visit the Nigeria High Commission London website and click ‘Re-issue of Standard Passport’.

  2. Click on ‘Apply for your passport’ and you will be redirected to the homepage of the Nigerian Immigration Service. Once the page has loaded, go to the passport section and select ‘Apply for Passport Renewal’ to start your application.

  4. Pay for your application and print out the completed application form.

  5. Return to the Nigeria High Commission website and book an appointment for your in-person meeting to hand over your relevant documents and finalise your application.

What are the requirements to renew a Nigerian passport in the UK?

When applying for a Nigerian passport renewal in the UK, there are certain documents and additional information you need to provide in order to meet the set requirements.

Before you attend your in-person appointment at the Nigeria High Commission, you will need the following. We also recommend that you check you have all the relevant information before you begin the renewal process and apply.

You will need:

  • An original Nigerian passport

  • A printed copy of the passport application form that has been successfully completed, dated and signed.

  • A copy of your National Identification Number (NIN). The information for which must match what is on your passport.

  • A printed version of your appointment booked via the Nigeria Immigration Service.

  • A £20 postal order made out to the Nigeria High Commission in London.

  • A special delivery envelope to enable the delivery of your passport back to you.

For minors under 17 years old, you will also need:

  • A copy of the details page from the parents’ passports which are listed on the child’s birth certificate. At least one parent must be a Nigerian citizen.

  • A consent form with both parents’ signatures.

  • The child’s birth certificate.

If you meet the above requirements, you will then be given a date for when your passport is expected to be returned to you.

There are circumstances where you might need to submit further documentation that we have not listed above. For example, if your passport is stolen or you are changing the name on your passport. How much is a Nigerian passport renewal in the UK?

For a simple reissue of a standard passport, all you have to pay is an administrative fee of £20 via postal order made payable to the Nigeria High Commission in London. When attending the Nigeria High Commission, you will also need to bring a Royal Mail C4 special delivery envelope to enable them to send your passport back to you.

If you are having to renew your passport because you have lost, misplaced or damaged your old one, then you will face a £250 charge. Once again, this will have to be paid via postal order and made payable to the Nigeria High Commission. Similarly, applications for Emergency Certificates follow the same process and will cost £120.

How long does it take to renew a Nigerian passport in the UK?

Typically, the renewal of your Nigerian passport in the UK will take approximately three weeks. For first-time applicants, the waiting time increases to six weeks.

In order to ensure that your application is not delayed, it is essential that you get all of the information correct the first time of asking. It is also worth noting that personal pickups from the Nigeria High Commission office in London are not permitted, so make sure that you include your correct postal information so you can receive your passport on time.

If your passport has already expired and you need to travel with immediate effect, then it is advisable to apply for an Emergency Certificate. This should help reduce the waiting time and will also give you added peace of mind should your renewal take longer than the estimated three weeks.
