Is there a limit on bank transfers in the UK?

An online bank transfer is now the most preferred method of sending money to another bank account, with 72% of UK adults using online banking and 54% using mobile banking.

The majority of these bank transfers are made using the Faster Payments System, which has a bank transfer limit of £1 million. However, the bank providers that offer this service will set their own limits, which we’ll discuss in more detail in the next section of this guide.

The limit they set largely depends on how the payment is sent and the type of account the customer is sending their bank transfer from. Some banks also let you set your own limit.

Online and mobile banking are the most popular methods of transferring money, but there’s an alternative that’s still used in branches, over the phone, and sometimes online. It’s called a CHAPS payment. CHAPS stands for Clearing House Automated Payment System and is still a regularly used method for transferring large amounts of money between UK banks. There’s no bank transfer limit in place when using this method. While it’s not as quick as Faster Payments, your bank transfer will still arrive the same day if it’s made before the cut-off time, which is usually 3.30pm GMT. CHAPS is often used to transfer large amounts of money at once, such as when buying a house.

UK providers: What are their bank transfer limits?

The list below shows general daily limits for the main UK providers using the Faster Payments System — including both personal and business transaction limits. Please refer to each bank provider’s own website for more information.(This information was all accurate at the time of writing, but the maximum bank transfer amount may change.)

Your bank provider will impose a limit if using the Faster Payments Service, in which case the information we have provided above becomes invaluable. If you’d like to avoid limits altogether, then the CHAPS payment method is still your best bet. However, due to the maximum bank transfer amount UK banks set being pretty high in most cases, it’s likely that the Faster Payments Service will cover you in many instances.

In terms of the process for transferring large amounts of money, it’s exactly the same as sending smaller amounts. However, fees and timescales will vary depending on the amount you’re sending, and the banking provider you use. As each individual case is different, we suggest you reach out to your provider if you have any questions.

For sending money internationally, you can send fast, flexible, and secure international money transfers across the world with WorldRemit.
