We, the employees of WorldRemit, fly two flags

We’ve been celebrating flying many flags from many countries. With offices all over the world, we’re proud to be a community of international migrants, just like you.

Seeing stories from our customers around the globe has been endlessly inspiring, so it’s time we shared some of our own.

Isabel - Regional Marketing Lead, Americas

Isabel’s everyday life is in the United States, but her heart is, and always will be, Colombian. Eager to experience new places and cultures, she moved to Canada and then onto New York, finally settling in Miami. It’s easy for Isabel to combine both flags that she flies, keeping Colombian traditions alive while embracing the ‘American way’.

According to Isabel, “the best part of Miami is that you get to taste your home food to the international cuisine, and you don’t get homesick since you can go back to Medellin in 3 hours.”

Olfa - CRM Executive

Olfa calls herself a pure Parisian but cherishes her Arabic heritage. Her parents are immigrants from Tunisia, and their decision to relocate inspired her to do the same. Now living in London, she says: “Immigrating is one of the hardest yet most fulfilling experiences one can experience in life”. Living in another country as an immigrant with French and Tunisian ties has enabled Olfa to learn a lot not only about other cultures but herself, too.

Eun-Hye - Junior Software Engineer

Eun-Hye is South Korean, but considers herself to be from more than one place. Until the age of eight, she lived in South Korea, then spent ten years living in Greece. Then came Oman for two years, and finally she settled in the UK where she’s been for five years.

Having lived in such a variety of countries with their own cultures, Eun-Hye considers each country as home: “They’ve all shaped me into the person that I am today. I’m proud to be from all these places and love connecting with people from everywhere!”

Amy - Community Manager

Born and raised in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, and now living in Denver, United States, Amy proudly flies both flags. Both cities are in fact ‘sister cities’, and Denver used to be home to the largest Mongolian population in the country.

“Rich in culture, people and food, both cities have influenced and shaped me into the person I am today,” Amy says of her two favourite cities. In 2019, Denver Zoo commissioned a Mongolian-born artist from Amy’s home city to update their 4D theatre with cultural artwork, which not only provided a great photo opportunity, but enriched the blending of both communities.

Jesse - Senior Designer

Currently working in London as our Senior Designer, Jesse was actually introduced to the world of art and design by his grandfather, an artist and revivalist of the German modernist movement. Alongside this influence, he also grew up with the great outdoors of New Zealand on his doorstep, adding a third flag for him to fly.

As well as experiencing what his New Zealand and  German ancestry had to offer, Jesse says: “London has opened my mind to its fascinating tapestry of culture, food and people.”

Priscilla - CRM Manager

Flying two flags, for the UK and for Ghana, has taught Priscilla a lot about family and responsibility. Her family values and bonds are strong and stem directly from her Ghanaian heritage. As well as influencing her personal life and career, her British-Ghanaian background plays a big part in her food choices: “You can’t be British without having our favourite: fish’n’chips!”

Priscilla always looks forward to visiting family who still live in Ghana, and her love for the culture is reflected by wearing colourful clothes and embracing the catchy rhythms of Afrobeat music.

Cyril - Head of Europe and Strategic Partnerships

Cyril flies not two, not three, but six flags! He is Lebanese by birth, and has lived all around the world, namely: Egypt, Romania, Bahrain, and Belgium. Sometimes this means his sports loyalties are very divided, particularly if two of his home countries compete against one another: “During Euro 2021, we’ve got different opinions between ‘Allez les Diables Rouges’ and ‘Allez les bleus’!”

Now living in Belgium, it’s very common to hear a multilingual mixing of phrases at home.

Ana - Senior Global Partnerships Manager

Ana has visited some of the most amazing places in the world and proudly flies flags from four countries. She was born and raised in Chihuahua, Mexico, which allowed her to visit the Copper Canyon and see the incredible Mayan pyramids in Yucatan.

She has lived, studied, and worked in Canada, Spain and now the UK, where she adds to her connection to  famous landmarks by living a stone’s throw from the infamous Abbey Road.

Ryan - Editorial Lead

Our British-born Editorial Lead, Ryan, keeps a constant and strong connection to his Jamaican roots. He visits his grandparents back in Jamaica as much as possible, and is utterly in love with Jamaican food, particularly his auntie’s jerk chicken which is ‘absolutely legendary’.

Ryan is endlessly proud of the impact that Jamaica has had on the world, particularly on music and sport. He’ll cheer on England at football but when it comes to athletics and the Olympics, it’s all about Jamaica.

Keeping the family ties strong is easy, particularly when they fall into such natural communication: “My family all break out into patois when together, even those who were born in the UK too - especially when around my grandmother.”

Wherever in the world we are, our cultures and backgrounds shape us. Join in the celebration of flying two flags (or more!) by using the hashtag #IFlyTwoFlags on your social channels.
