Which mobile money accounts can I send to in Tanzania?

You can send to any of the following mobile money accounts:

  • Tigo Pesa or Airtel mobile money accounts

  • Ezy Pesa or Vodacom M-Pesa mobile money accounts

The mobile money account must be (1) fully registered and (2) active.

When will funds be credited to mobile money accounts in Tanzania?

Vodacom M-Pesa, Tigo Pesa or Airtel mobile money accounts:

  • Speed: Instant

Ezy Pesa mobile money accounts:

  • Speed: Credited within 1 business day

We will notify you and your recipient by email when funds are credited. We may sometimes require further information from you before we can process the transfer in order to comply with our regulatory requirements. We will email you if this is the case.

How much can I send to mobile money accounts in Tanzania?

Ezy Pesa or Vodacom M-Pesa mobile money accounts:

  • A maximum of TZS 5,000,000 per transfer

Airtel mobile money accounts:

  • A maximum of TZS 5,000,000 per transfer

  • A maximum of TZS 5,000,000 per day

Tigo Pesa Mobile Money accounts:

  • A maximum of TZS 5,000,000 per transfer

  • A maximum of TZS 90,000,000 per month

  • A maximum of TZS 5,000,000 wallet balance at one time

What information do I need from my recipient to send mobile money to Tanzania?

  • Full name. Please enter your recipient’s full name. To avoid any delays, the recipient’s name should match the name registered on their mobile money account.

  • Address. We need your recipient’s city.

  • Mobile Money account number:

    • Fully registered and active Tigo Pesa, Airtel, EzyPesa or Vodacom M-Pesa accounts only.

    • Length: 9 digits in total (excluding country code)

    • Vodacom M-Pesa mobile wallet accounts begin with one of the following prefixes: 742, 743, 744, 745, 746, 747, 748, 749, 752, 753, 754, 755, 756, 757, 758, 749, 762, 763, 764, 765, 766, 767, or 768.

    • Airtel mobile wallet accounts begin with one of the following prefixes: 68, 69 or 78

    • EzyPesa mobile wallet accounts begin with one of the following prefixes: 77

  • Contact mobile number. We ask for a contact number in case we need to provide any important updates. This can be different from the mobile money account number.

  • Sending reason. Please indicate whether it is “family or friend support,” “purchase of services,” “property payment,” or “sending fund to self”.

Please ensure that all your recipient’s details are correct. Once you make your transfer, it is difficult for us to amend or stop the transfer, although we will always try our best to do so.

What fees does my recipient pay in Tanzania?

WorldRemit does not charge your recipient any additional fees for the Mobile Money transfer.

However, some local operators may charge them a fee when they withdraw funds as cash. This depends on the mobile operator’s policy and is not determined by WorldRemit.

How do I send mobile money to Tanzania?

You can send mobile money to Tanzania from more than 50 countries around the world using any device. All you need to do is:

  1. Select ‘Mobile Money Transfer’ on the Tanzania page

  2. Choose to pay the money into Tigo Pesa or Ezy Pesa and M-Pesa mobile money accounts

  3. Enter the amount you’d like to send

  4. We show you the low fees that apply and the amount of Tanzanian shillings (TZS) your recipient will receive

  5. Choose how you want to pay

Both you and your recipient will receive an SMS notification once the transfer is complete.
