VP of Infrastructure

London

Who are we?

WorldRemit is changing the way people send money internationally. We’ve taken something complicated and made it as simple as sending a text. And we’re growing. Fast.

To do this, we need to hire bright people who can work autonomously and make the right decisions.

What you’ll be working on:

Based in London, reporting to the CTO, you will be the leader for our global Infrastructure function, encompassing both our public cloud-native services and our internal IT function. WorldRemit’s Infrastructure team is responsible for the development, procurement and support of the systems on which our business runs, on which development takes place and through which our employees interact.

Teams that will be reporting to this role include our DevOps teams in London and Krakow, our DBA and Cloud Ops teams in Krakow, and the Corporate IT teams, based in London, Krakow, Cebu and Denver.

This is a great opportunity for a Senior Engineering Leader to play a pivotal role in scaling up a global finTech organisation in a vibrant, exciting, fast-growing business.

Your responsibilities:

The role reports to the CTO; key relationships include the heads of engineering and engineering initiatives, security, quality, architecture and technology operations. The entire infrastructure team includes around 35 employees spread across a number of teams and geographical locations.

A key member of the Senior Technology Leadership Team, you will help drive our engineering maturity, scale the team and contribute to our overall technology strategy. Hold your own in technical discussions, be a subject matter expert and have strategic influence.

Cloud Operations

WorldRemit’s Cloud Operations team, based in Krakow, provides 24/7 support for our main production platform infrastructure, including monitoring, performance and cost management and incident resolution. WorldRemit’s cloud-native, microservices-based framework runs on Amazon’s AWS platform using technology such as Kafka, Docker and Kubernetes, as well as CloudFlare’s CDN. Some residual services reside on Microsoft Azure.

Other key technologies include AppDynamics, PagerDuty and Kong, as well as a number of technology-specific monitoring solutions such as Prometheus and KafkaHQ. Automated alert management services include integrations with Jira and Slack.

DevOps

WorldRemit’s DevOps teams, based in London and Krakow, support the respective engineering teams in the development, automation and management of Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery build pipelines, and manage the health and maintenance of our multiple pre-production and test environments.

Key technologies include Github, Jenkins, Terraform, Docker and Kubernetes. Our pre-production, staging and test environments are based on AWS.

Database Management

Our DBA team, based in Krakow, provides a pool of expertise to support some of our larger legacy databases, based on SQL Server, and also the PaaS databases (based on SQL Server and Postgres) consumed by our microservices. Other key technologies include: Redgate monitoring tools, Amazon Cloudwatch, AppDynamics.

Corporate IT

Our Corporate IT teams, based in London, Krakow, Denver and Cebu provide IT support for a growing internal end user base (currently around 1000), collected in our four main offices and a dozen smaller global satellite offices, as well as connectivity and shared services for contractor resources based in La Coruña, Kiev and Johannesburg.

Corporate IT services include internal global network and security systems, telephony, end user compute, local file and print – as well as the people, process and systems to support these services – managing all aspects of the internal IT infrastructure.

End user support involves support for a number of key technologies, including Google GSuite, Zoom, Slack and Okta. End user operating environments include Windows, MacOS, Linux and ChromeOS.

What we are looking for:

We’re looking for an individual with genuine technical experience across the range of technologies and services the role is required to support. The successful candidate will have come from an engineering-oriented background and be able to demonstrate strong technical capabilities, ideally and in particular in the field of AWS.

We’re looking for someone who can initiate technical projects; hire, develop and inspire a team of strong technical athletes; and who can present and communicate ideas clearly both to senior management, to the industry at large and potentially to the company’s investors and board members.

We also expect the individual to be capable of working collegiately with peers both within and outside the senior technology team. While experience of working in large scale financial organisations isn’t required, the candidate will need to demonstrate that they can work in a large, fast-growing and highly distributed organisation. They’ll also need enough business background to understand and manage budgets, in conjunction with our Head of Technical Operations.

Some other things to think about:

  • A track record of setting the highest level of engineering standards: architecture, processes, and working practices, working in a multi-location engineering organisation.
  • Experience of managing, at scale, cloud production environments based on one of the leading cloud platforms - Azure, AWS and Google GCP - preferably on AWS and preferably in a regulated fintech environment across multiple locations.
  • Experience of the following technologies: Github, Jenkins, Terraform, Docker, Kubernetes, CloudFlare
  • Experience of at least some of the following monitoring/logging solutions: App Dynamics (or similar APM solution), Splunk
  • Deep technical knowledge of modern engineering technologies and practices.
  • The ability to effectively collaborate with an engineering organisation, to provide considered and structured feedback about service infrastructure, to support high quality solutions and to review plans from a maintenance perspective
  • Demonstrated success in recruiting and retaining top technology talent; a modern leader who is passionate about developing the team.
  • People manager with the necessary gravitas to effectively lead.
  • Track record of building capability through developing people; deep understanding of how to optimise team performance for growth.
  • A strong, collaborative communicator who can have a positive impact across engineering and the broader business.
  • Innovative mindset – will have informed views on the latest technologies and the most effective ways of trialling and deploying them.
  • A degree in a technology-related subject would be preferable.

What’s in it for you…

  • Life assurance of 3 times your salary, should the worst happen
  • Pension scheme offering 8% matched contributions
  • Private medical and dental care plans
  • 25 days of holiday plus bank holidays, rising to 28 after 3 years

Oh and of course we’ll pay you every month, at a competitive rate.

And finally...

Changing the world isn’t easy – so we only hire the most talented people. You need to think differently, believe in new solutions to old problems, and have the drive to make them happen.

We want to talk to you if you can bring to life our values:

  • Aim high - We dream big, think bold and go the extra mile
  • Embrace challenge - We ask questions, start conversations, and always love to learn
  • Do what’s right - We act with integrity, building trust in ourselves and in our business
